Did System Recovery- couldn't connect to IE. Spent all day between Comcast and HP techs, fixed all settings- did tests. They say they have exhausted their options! Their opinion -something is blocking IE. Can connect to IE in Safe Mode. Have no anti virus or firewalls installed. Went through all programs to check for anything. Can connect through Firefox in regular mode. Have XP 1st ed. and IE6 but it isn't the version that allows IE7. I downloaded updates to IE6. Didn't help. Computer is about 5 years old. Have used the Recovery disk in past- about 3 years ago. Worked fine then.
Only other change installed is a G-Force 6200 AGP graphics card, which did not replace origional, but went in extra empty slot. Has been installed for a year before Recovery. Seems to have no firewall properties. I think I have spoken with EVERY tech at Comcast and HP at this point!! Anyone else think of something that could be blocking IE?
Can't use IE7 as they say I don't have XP 2nd ed, which is needed for it. I myst have XP 1st Ed.
If I have XP service pack 1, I can't download service pack 2 it if I can 't use IE. It won't let me download it from Firefox..I don't want to add any firewalls until we solve the problem, as something is blocking IE6.

IE7
=======
Over time IE7 seems to set its own (or programs do) tick boxes in the advance tab.
In IE7 Tools >Internet Options >Advance Tab
Click Restore advance settings defaults button.
Then scroll the listings down to near the bottom and:
Tick empty temp files when browser closes (this empties the cache, which if not empty, will stop you from going online).
Bullet disable phishing filter (optional. Leave it on if you want that type of protection, usually for financial data like internet banking)
Delete Browser History, cookies, add ons, the whole lot regularly.
Close the browser to set the settings.
then open ie7 >tools >imternet options >connection tab
select never dial if on broadband then click the setup button and run the wizard to establish internet connection.

"Have XP 1st ed"
There is no "XP 1st Edition." If you meant XP Service Pack 1, you really should update to at least Service Pack 2. It is free.

"Have no anti virus or firewalls installed"
Bad idea. It is very likely that you have spyware attempting to redirect your browser when it is running normally. Try running "Hijack This!", and see if any odd programs are running or installed that might not show up in the Task Manager.
