I have norton antivirus/internet security software and i was looking at the history. Apparently there was an intrusion attempt via portscan. Norton blocked it and gave me the ip address and I was wondering where can i go to look up the ip address?

don't bother, it's probably in East Russia or … Canada. *shutter*
If the hacker was good, the IP that you got is a fake, and leads to the middle of nowhere.

you can google for whois sites and find one where you can put in an ip address rather then just a domain, put if the hacker was smart they would be running through a proxy out of russia or amsterdam ( thats where I've found two from before on my site).
If on the off chance you find an IP that represents a big name company (rogers, ATT etc) you can send an email notifying them of the IP/time/ activity etc and they may due something, but not likely. Best thing you can do is just block ip's in the range of that address.
A portscan is bassically a computer program that scans a range of IP addresses then tries to connect to them on all possible ports, then if a connection is available it will send instructions to your computer, most firewalls have been blocking this for years.

Don't waste your time. This will happen all the time - it's nothing personal. Someone scanned t o see if you have open ports
Visit the link below to see how exposed you are- then fix anything that needs fixing.

Normally, personal firewalls will block any attempted intruding IP for 30 minutes and will continue to do so if it does not stop. This 30 minutes in the default setting in NIS. The entries in the log are for your reference. Well there is nothing much you can do with those IP addresses, except looking for them in Whois. Those IP addresses could be spoofed, came through a proxy or it was exploited. Keep your Antivirus and Firewall updated regularly with latest virus definitions and updates.
