Use AVG. They even have a free edition that you can download. It's the best damn thing out there.

AVG or Avast! Home edition. I'm thinking that you may need to change some options to save resources and only scan when you want to. But this shouldn't be too much of a problem. Good Luck!
Extra Note: Having 2 anti-virus/firewalls may sound good, however it can cause hanging, or even crashing.

Here are some free antivirus and antispyware applications. However, if you don't have antivirus actively running, it will only be a matter of time before you'll contract malware that could cripple your system entirely. As for the antispyware applications, you'll need to go into the settings after downloading and disable any real time protection feature (eg: disabling TeaTimer in Spybot S&D).

Spyware Blocker
This is free and requires you to check for and enable updates manually once a week or so. It uses no system resources. It blocks spyware before it installs.

Note: Only use one anti-virus product. Running more than one can cause conflicts thus rendering each ineffective. Below are links to Norton and SmartComputing outlining problems when having more than one active AV product:

Nearly every anti-virus can be turned on and off as wanted.

For Anti Spam/Adware I would highly recommend Windows Defender. Available for free download here.

I've tried other free AdWare programs like Lavasoft Adware (http://lavasoft.com/single/trialpay.php)…but they failed to detect some of the spyware which Defender could.
Regarding Anti-Virus, Mc-Affee…Norton…any of them will do the job…but they all are drain on resources (esp CPU).
