I am looking for a good, free anti-virus and anti-spyware software for home use.
I heard avast! Anti-virus is good. Do they offer real-time protection like Norton and McAfee?
I was also trying to download Spybot Search and Destroy but when I install it, I get an error.
So what do you recommend? Should I just pay for Norton or McAfee or is there any other possibilities?

spyware spybot is good, might try uninstalling it and retrying to download. never encountered an error before with it.
adaware is also a great choice

I use AVG Free for almost 4 yrs now and its great, updates almost daily and works great, they allso have a free spyware program as well

I have been building computers for about 10 years now and the best free scanner around is AVG Antivirus free edition. You can download it at free.grisoft.com .
Spyware protection can be had for free from Microsoft. Windows Defender is the best at removing infections without destroying crucial system files. You can download it at http://www.microsoft.com . Just follow the links to the download sections.
In our business we have tried and used many antivirus programs and spyware programs but these are the two we always load on our computers that we build.

You should NEVER pay for Norton or McAfee, they're overbloated pieces of junk. Actually you shouldn't accept them even if they pay you.
