Antivirus, antispyware, etc for Ubuntu?

April 19th, 2008 · 4 Comments

Yes I am aware that Linux is not in a big need for antivirus and antispyware but I am doing a school project, is there already these things integrated on the OS already? Or do I need to download them from somewhere? Is there any place that I can just download the packet onto my flash drive and take it to the computer I am using with Ubuntu and just click on it an download it? I honestly hate that sudo crap, so if there is any way I can go around that, it is appreciated, also, the computer I am using for the project, it is a schools computer, and as it is not a recognized PC on the network I am unable to hook it up to the internet and download it straight to the PC…

If you "hate that sudo crap", why are you using Linux?

Trend Micro is one of the first, if no the first, to create antispyware for free open source Linux OS (Operating System)…..

Links and information to the available softwares for anitvirus and antispyware are here:

Although your observations about Linux security neccessary softwares are at least acknowledged - the truth is that currently in the cyber criminal underground there has been a major shift to use Linux to commit "bot-herder" control of malware botnets involving up to or more than a million computers. Research "botnets" or slang: 'zombie networks'.

Clamav is the free one, but I am aware that Avira (who are excellent) do anti-virus for Linux. Have a look at their website: http://www.avira.com/

Antivirus: Nope not necessary unless you want to scan your windows drive with it. Linux cant be easily infected and there are not many viruses that can infect a linux box.

AntiSpyware: Nope. (ah the joy of linux )

Firewall: Nope. But i do recommend having one anyways. The most simple and effective would be "firestarter"
code for terminal : sudo apt-get install firestarter

there is an firewall for ubuntu
      ClamAV
      (Code:sudo apt-get install clamav)

      download panda Antivirus
      http://www.pandasoftware.com/download/linux.htm
If you dont know how to install look in the wiki or ask in the Ubuntu forum.
      Hope this helps. goodluck.
