AntiVirus Compatibility Questions… ?

November 13th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I now have McAfee at the minute, and Spybot-Search and destroy.

But I have been wanting to be able to use Malwarebytes anti-malware also, because it has internet protection for registered, or I might use AVG. But, I am not sure if it will conflict or not

I know that you CAN’T have 2 AV systems, but you CAN have more than 2 virus removers. But I don’t know which apply to which.

So any help will be appreciated. I am asking, could you tell me which goes in to which category, and since I have McAfee can I have AVG or Malwarebytes anti-malware?
Sorry, but that's mainly not what I asked. I need to know what program is which and can I keep the one and get another, etc.

Antivirus software (sometimes spelled Anti-Virus or anti-virus with the hyphen) are computer programs that attempt to identify, neutralize or eliminate malicious software. The term “antivirus” is used because the earliest examples were designed exclusively to combat computer viruses; however most modern antivirus software is now designed to combat a wide range of threats, including worms, phishing attacks, rootkits, Trojans, often described collectively as malware.

Spyware is computer software that is installed surreptitiously on a personal computer to intercept or take partial control over the user’s interaction with the computer, without the user’s informed consent.

While the term spyware suggests software that secretly monitors the user’s behavior, the functions of spyware extend well beyond simple monitoring. Spyware programs can collect various types of personal information, such as Internet surfing habit, sites that have been visited, but can also interfere with user control of the computer in other ways, such as installing additional software, redirecting Web browser activity, accessing websites blindly that will cause more harmful viruses, or diverting advertising revenue to a third party. Spyware can even change computer settings, resulting in slow connection speeds, different home pages, and loss of Internet or other programs. In an attempt to increase the understanding of spyware, a more formal classification of its included software types is captured under the term privacy-invasive software.

In response to the emergence of spyware, a small industry has sprung up dealing in anti-spyware software. Running anti-spyware software has become a widely recognized element of computer security best practices for Microsoft Windows desktop computers. A number of jurisdictions have passed anti-spyware laws, which usually target any software that is surreptitiously installed to control a user’s computer.

In my opinion, you can use McAfee, Spybot and Malwarebytes or AVG, Spybot and Malwarebytes.Since McAfee and AVG are both anti-virus and anti-spyware programs, I don’t think you should have these two simultaneously.
