Antivirus Question: AVG or Norton?

September 4th, 2008 · 11 Comments

I just had my computer reformatted and the anti-virus that came with the laptop was the AVG Anti-Virus (8.0). My father tells me that i should reinstall the Norton prior to the reformat because:
1. It’s “still” better at detecting viruses
2. AVG is “free”, ergo, unreliable (for him anyway).
3. I need to finish my remaining subscription which is 2-3 months or less. (i have the product key anyway)

One reason why I want to keep AVG because I noticed that AVG found viruses on my rewritable CDs which Norton couldnt find when i scanned it with Norton. I also looked at Norton’s online database and the viruses found were not there. Another is that Norton is a resource hog during LiveUpdate and it couldnt detect the very viruses that caused me to reformat my laptop in the first place.

With all that being said, should I keep AVG or get back my Norton?

Reasons as to keeping AVG and/or getting back norton would be appreciated too, plus any pros and cons of both. =)

Norton takes up more disk space and memory than AVG. I have an idea. Why dont you use Norton for the remaining subscription period and then install AVG. No choice later then!

I would keep your AVG and be rid of Norton. Norton is a resource hog and AVG is not. Being in this service industry, I see over and over again the amount of virus infected machines that have Norton on them.

norton is THE worst program to use! avg is much better but still not the best. go with avast! from avast.com free and better than both of those. your dad is wrong and obviously doesnt know as much about computers as he thinks he does if he is saying free isnt better. free is always better.

I respectfully disagree with your father. Norton may be more well-established but it doesn't necessarily detect more viruses. Personally, I hate Norton because it uses a ridiculous amount of system resources and gets in the way.

AVG may be free but it is well-established and keeps current with updates. I don't think very many comparison reviews have ever rated it as inadequate.

For the record, I use Kaspersky myself but if I didn't, I would use AVG.

I would probably say norton but you should get the norton 360 it has every think but i am not saying avg is bad because that is also good i am using it now but i like norton better.

      Neither.

Norton and AVG both tend to take over your computer and make it run very VERY slow. I’d recommend Kaspersky as it takes up the least resources on your computer while doing it’s thing. Faster computer means you get to do more while your computer is being protected. Also, after installing Kaspersky on my system (I had AVG previously), it picked up SEVERAL things that AVG did not.

Check it out, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

      Hi,
With my personal experience, I preferred AVG to Norton for many reasons. Norton is slower while checking and hogs resources. AVG 8 includes a real-time shield to prevent infections, anti-virus and anti-malware wrapped up in one product. The program doesn’t tax your system when scanning or when running in the background. Rapid virus database updates are available for the for it. AVG Free is easy to use and will not slow your system down (low system resource requirements for scanning as well as updates).
Hence would recommend you stick with AVG and use a good fire wall software like COMODO.

      AVG, Faster, Safer, Smarter.

I used to have norton.. but i hated it because my computer was losing space and it was slowing it down…

it used up 2 GB of my harddrive :o

      and AVG only uses 48MB

      saved alot of space…

so if i was you i would switch to AVG or use your norton til the subscription is over then get AVG.
