Antivirus scan and antispyware scan always freeze. How to fix this problem?

I am never able to get a complete antivirus or antispyware scan because they freeze in the middle. I have Avira antivir premium antivirus. I also have subscription to Mcafee security suite.

I uninstalled Avira antivir premium and installed mcafee suite. But mcafee scan freezed in the middle too.

I then uninstalled mcafee security suite and installed AVG free antivirus. Surprisingly AVG free antivirus scan freezed too!

PC tools spyware doctor scan freezed too. I then tried using ad-aware 2008 scan and that freezed too. I have maximum RAM on my laptop of 2GB, so I don’t think this has anything to do with memory.

I suspect there is some malicious malware or virus that freezes antivirus scan and antispyware scan. I downloaded lot of things from internet and somewhere some infected file may have downloaded too.

Please let me know what to do to fix this.
