Alright here is exactly what is happening with my computer. I recently got this Antivirus XP 2008 on my computer. Less then 24 hours ago from this moment. Certain websites will not open through Firefox or Internet Explorer. I can not download certain programs through the internet, but there are some instances where I can.
I’ve tried some of these programs that are free, but end up doing nothing but scanning. It seems like I’ve removed most of the harmful stuff, which would be the program itself, but the effects of the program are still here. My background is that stupid “WARNING” thing and it won’t be changed. I can’t change the background, and some websites will not show. Please help me fix this problem, and my computer. If you can please run me by step by step, or just give me a program that will be sure to work. I have Spy Sweeper and Norton Internet Security on my computer, both have failed to pick up a problem. I also have Spyware Doctor, but it’s been useless because it won’t run live updates. A system update isn’t much of an option because I have too much precious data to lose.
Once again, please help me get rid of this problem.

This site is excellent at getting rid of it (I've had to remove it from about 10 computers): http://www.xp-vista.com/spyware-removal/antivirus2008-antivirus-2008-removal-instructions
Just make sure you follow EVERY instruction BEFORE you restart the computer. If you don't, then it can reduplicate itself and you have to start ALL over.
Antivirus programs don't take care of it, because it's not a virus. Spyware programs don't, because it's not spyware. Antivirus 2008/9 are designed to trick you into paying money for them.

Start/Settings/Control Panel/Internet properties/ click the first tab (system restore).

alt-ctrl-del to open Task manager … go to processes and find Anti-virus 2008 highlight and stop process (this stops it running so you can open web pages)…..
You can then search online for a removal tool … or if you're confident … you can do a run-regedit and search your registry for all instances of antivirus 2008 and manually remove them ….
BE CAREFUL … removing the wrong entries can result in your computer NOT booting ….. only remove the entries with the full "antivirus 2008" in them
You will need to turn your System Restore off and when your done turn it back on …otherwise the AV2008 will re-install itself from your System Restore

Norton Internet Security removed it completely for me. But if it doesn’t work, you’re better off Googling “Antivirus XP 2008″. There’s a ton of websites ready to give you help.

Go to microsofts website http://www.microsoft.com/security/default.mspx and run the malicious software removal tool. This should remove antivirus xp but if it doesn’t download either avast! spyware remover or avg antivirus free home edition and run scans (both programs are free).

Firstly, antivirus programs will NOT remove these as they are malicious codecs, although they may find reference to them and remove it but upon rebooting it's back again.
Therefore you need to use a 'layered' approach to removing this parasite. Some of these now remove Restore Points as well as removing your background image (wallpaper) - for which there are fixes below, but you will need to create a new Restore Point if you have lost yours.
These have worked in hundreds of removals:
RogueRemover:
http://www.download.com/RogueRemover/3000-8022_4-10634508.html
Download, install, update, scan and follow on screen prompts.
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:
http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?hhTest=1.
Download, install, update and select Full Scan.
Remove all infections that it finds after scan.
Spybot S&D:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Download, install, update and Immunize, turn off Tea Timer then click 'Check for problems' then when complete select all and then 'Fix Checked'
SmitFraud Removal
Firstly, download the removal tool from here:

SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition:
http://www.download.com/SUPERAntiSpyware-Free-Edition/3000-8022_4-10523889.html
Download, install, check for updates, then select Scan your Computer, select your drive and select Perform Complete Scan
VundoFix:
http://www.symantec.com/content/en/us/global/removal_tool/threat_writeups/FixVundo.exe
Disconnect your computer from the internet
Run vundo
Restart your computer
Run the tool again to ensure no traces are left.
If there are the reboot into Safe Mode and run FixVundo again.
If your desktop has changed or icons are missing also use:
Wallpaper Hijacker Removal Tool:

Note: You should hit all "Repair" buttons even though it may not say "Found!" This will fix a wallpaper hijack everytime if all repair buttons are pressed.

If the problem persists, turn OFF System Restore and scan with the above programs in Safe Mode, Right click My computer > select Properties > System Restore Tab > Tick Turn Off System restore on all drives.
After scans are complete and machine is clean remember to turn system restore back ON and create a new restore point.
Once your scans are complete and your machine is clean, uninstall some of the programs, I suggest that you keep Malwarebytes for manual scanning, Spyware Doctor for realtime monitoring and Spybot. The remainder can be removed to save drive space, but you may want to keep the installers for future use.

Scroll down to the bottom on left hand column
and you will see it there.
Follow the directions carefully for removal.
This is entirely free.
Hope this helps. Or go to http://www.revo.com and download their uninstaller. It’s free and excellent.
Next, go to http://www.avast.com and download their anti-virus. Free and excellent. Mcafee is crap. Use Revo Uninstaller to get rid of it after you get Avast.
Last, go to http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirro… and download SpyBot, which is also free and excellent.

Antivirus XP 2008 is NOT a virus, therefore, antivirus removers will not remove it. It is a particularly bad piece of spyware, and the only thing I found that will remove it is SuperAntiSpyware. Free and easy to use. Just keep it updated weekly, use it weekly, and you won’t have this kind of stuff hanging around.
