i’m really starting to get fed up with this crap. i manually got rid of this “antivirus xp 2008″ thing about 3 weeks ago. so last night it came up again. i decided to download “malwarebytes’ anti-malware”. i searched my computer, deleted all of the malware, and restarted the computer at least twice and it decided to come back tonight. i’m angry. does anybody have a better solution then this anti-malware crap?
if it helps at all, the virus got through my computer through firefox, not ie.

Here are links for a good security program for you. Download & run these. Also, use Firefox instead of IE, much safer.

Malwarebytes is one of the best programs for removing fake software download, update and run a scan - http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
The other two programs to try are:
SuperAntispyware: http://www.download.com/SUPERAntiSpyware-Free-Edition/3000-8022_4-10523889.html?cdlPid=10850129
SmitFraudfix: http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php.
Once you have removed it install Avast Anti-Virus and Comodo Pro firewall, then switch to Firefox 3 if you are browsing with IE this will stop it returning. (links on my profile)

I had the same problem but i have found the easy step on how to find and delete them.
1) From Start –> Search, then click on “For Files and Folders…“
2)From “What do you want to search for?” list on the left, click on “All files and folders”
3)Type the filenames on the search box, and choose the “Local Hard Drives” (normally, it’s C: drive)
4)Click on “Search“. That’s it!

I would suggest that you get Avast. It is free for personal use.
Yesterday, my free anti-virus caught a trojan virus.
To ensure that the virus caught is not a false positive, I upload it to virus total web site to check.

To my surprise, all the big names in Anti-virus industry cannot detect the trojan. The one that detect the trojan are mainly the free version.
Avast boot scan in Windows safe mode is the most effective way to get rid of
stubborn trojans and viruses that keep coming back to haunt you.
These trojan and viruses hide themselves in system restore folder and many anti-virus programs cannot get rid of them. So whenever, you restart your PC,
the viruses are restore back by WIndows.
Avast boot scan help to get rid of them in the system restore folders and ensure your system are clean.

i tried a few different things including AVG but they did not work. i found a guide on removing Antivirus XP 2008 http://www.spyware-techie.com/antivirusxp-2008-how-to-remove-antivirus-xp-2008/ where it has you boot into safe mode and run smitfraudfix. that worked for me. May want to try it, it is free.
