Free programs are all I use. Its the rare case when they can't clean a specific problem.
These are my top pics. I have no connection to them, I just think they work.
Spybot Search and Destroy, to remove spyware.

There is nothing wrong with the genuine free programs. Most of them offer a free personal use version, then small business and large enterprise versions they charge good money for. So the free version is kind of advertising for them, and making people familiar with them.
There are also heaps of smaller utilities which are free or shareware (free trial, pay later) many written by geeks for their own use originally. Some are very basic to look at, but do their little job well. Two good sites to look for such things are

BEWARE of sites offering "free downloads"…they charge you nothing for the DOWNLOAD but the program might costs you…or you have to pay to join the site first.
Spyware scanners there is a whole industry for offering fake, not working or cheating ones. Some are sold by putting a virus on your machine, to fool you into buying their remover!!!
Also many (but not all) free online scans will find viruses for free (including some that are not there) then you have to pay to remove them. Others are truly free for a trial period, and do remove viruses, but give you popups every half hour demanding that you buy them. These give a bad name to all free scanners.
Anything you find recommended on this site have been tried and tested; many of us will download and check out stuff suggested by another trusted user.

I like AVAST as antivirus…it has separate modules for Internet, P2P(limewire) and Email monitoring. You switch them in or out as needed, so it takes up a lot less memory. Many others load up in one hunk, a problem on a machine with lowish RAM.

Then Spybot is good for spyware, especially if you check out Advanced mode

Then nowadays people forget about adware viruses, but Ad-Aware is the original and still best remover for them

Then it's useful to have something to clean up caches, cookies, internet temporary files, as well as clear old (or virus-installed) Registry entries. Ccleaner is my choice

I do not like AVG; there are many complaints about it. I found it misbehaves, causing occasional system freezes.
Some people swear by the major paid ones, Norton and McAffee. Other people swear AT them.
Norton is stickyware, it is hard to uninstall, even with its own uninstaller (which you have to download separately). They both have good sites where you can look up descriptions of your virus, but anyone can look at the sites. But they both chew up a LOT of memory with their monitoring modules.
