Assassin's Creed running slow on my PC?

I got a Core 2 Duo 6400, 3GB of RAM and a Radeon X1300 video card. The game's intro movie runs flawlessly however when I try to play the game itself is VERY slow. Most of the newer games I have tested have the same problem. Since I have more than enough to run newer games, is there something else that could be causing them to run so slow?
Btw.. i have the latest version of DirecX and running Vista 32bit.
