VG has proven itself to be a miserable performer at best. Missing almost 20%, while trying to detect known malware, in some tests.
AVG, and Avast aren't good. Avira antivir is probably the best free one. For proof go to av-comparatives.org this is one of the most trusted anti virus comparison sites.

Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!
What do you think about AVG after reading this ?
Sorry for saying the same stuff again and again .

Strange question, but I've always known that I guess. Avira is top choice, even if the popups are slightly annoying. AVG is notorious for false positives (ie. with cracks and keygens)

Only the 'Free' edition of AVG is 'BAD'. the paid version is much better, but i don't have it. I've stopped trusting AVG since that day i was on a website looking for some info, a very harmful virus came through to my computer, which put my computer in a IT technician for 5 months flat. It was very sad seeing my new computer go! but now i use ESSET Nod32, the paid version of it. very reliable, and amazing!

IF Avira scanned email, did a boot-time scan, AND could be trusted to auto-update reliably, I would *consider* trading my Avast for it.
Go to the Avira forums and read the thread after thread of people with auto-update complaints, and the only replies are 'you must have a bad connection' . Yeah… everyone has a bad connection…

This is actually a very good source & I use it often, however you have to read this one sentence that they stress
"Please rely on the reached certification levels (which take false alarms into account) and NOT on the percentages alone."

which shows that AVG & Avast actually performed pretty well. Personally, I never said Avira was a bad antivirus, I really like it. But I do prefer Avast as a personal preference.
My favorite paid version of an antivirus is Kaspersky, which historically is one of the best
