AVG Antivirus?

May 4th, 2008 · 5 Comments

I recently replaced Norton with AVG on my computer, and I like AVG a lot better. Now I'm wondering if I even need to keep my other protection programs. I have Ad-Aware 2007, Spybot Search and Destroy, Wise Registry Cleaner, and Wise Disk Cleaner. Do I need to keep any of these, or can AVG do everything they do?

yes all are keepers — wise registry cleaner is good to have - but — dont use it to excess — sometimes constant repair does more harm than good

Yes! AVG will only protect you from viruses. The other crap will together give you all around protection.

First of all, EXCELLENT CHOICE! Norton is the root of all evil in my opinion. AVG is fantastic! I have the free version. If you have Windows XP or Vista then you should have Windows Defender (or be able to download it from microsoft). You don't need all those extra programs to keep your computer running quickly. Actually having them all running at startup will most likely slow your computer down. Also I would advise against ANY registry cleaner or disk cleaner. I haven't used "Wise" but I've heard nothing but horror stories from those types of software.

Yeah, AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is A LOT better than Norton, because Norton is such a resource hog… But even then I would use these programs:

      SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition
      Spyware Doctor (Starter Edition)

And for antivirus, I would use: avast! Antivirus

And for disk cleaners: CCleaner AND/OR Glary Utilities.

Those are just enough programs in my opinion; more would be overkill and would slow down your computer. SUPERAntiSpyware is there, because its definitions get updated constantly, so it's always finding the new threats. The thing about Spyware Doctor being in there is that it scored the highest on PC World's tests. avast! Antivirus, is the best in my opinion. It is the second best in terms of detection rates out of the free programs (first being Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic). The thing with that program though, is that it has terrible proactive detection; which I'm sure you wouldn't want. In terms of scanning, it is better, but that's only because malware has been installed before you could even do anything about it. It's not really good in terms of proactive protection - before viruses get installed. Also, the fact that avast! Antivirus scans a little faster, updates more smoothly and often (not intrusive, by the way), and more importantly, if your computer is really bogged up, then it could delete the virus on site - when you startup the computer!

Other programs like Spybot - Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware 2007 kind of give no actual protection. It just gives you a false sense of security. Not to mention the fact that Ad-Aware 2007 has terrible detection rates, and even worse: updates that just can't update.
