AVG Antivirus free problem? PLEASE HELP (10pts)?

November 22nd, 2008 · 12 Comments

when i turn on my computer AVG sends a pop up saying ‘invalid update control CTF file’ and when i select ‘update’ and accept to program (yes, i trust it on my PC) it just comes up with ‘invalid update control CTF file’ again.
My computer is not protected because of this, but i cant update it.
Any suggestions, or should I take it to a Professional?

Before paying someone to fix the problem I would try uninstalling it and install it again.

Have you tried, uninstalling AVG then restarting your computer then reinstalling AVG. I had to do this once when it had an update error.

AVG was once a good anti-virus but is now very poor, your best solution is to remove it and replace it with Avast which is also free.

      Best Free Anti-Virus Software:

Avast home edition is free and effective, it scans your downloads for viruses (unlike AVG) and also includes anti-rootkit and anti-spyware, it can also run a boot scan,
I use Avast along side Comodo Pro firewall both are free and have been independently tested and proven to be more effective then Norton or Mcafee.

      Avast Anti-Virus: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
      Comodo Pro: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

Why Avast is better then AVG:

AVG themselves state that the free version of their Anti-Virus does NOT scan downloads for malicious content where as the free version of Avast DOES, whats the point in having anti-virus software that can’t prevent viruses from being downloaded to your computer, I’ve also tested both using the EICAR test viruses, AVG allowed all the viruses onto the computer Avast blocked them instantly Avast offers far superior protection.

Go to control panel, add remove programme,
      uninstal avg &restart your computer.

Download & INSTAL latest version of AVG,

Ensure to update software after instalation.

LATEST VERSION CONTAINS THE UPDATES & WILL SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM.

The first two answers are spot on. You have something corrupted in the software and the easiest and best way to fix it is to delete AVG completely and that includes a restart of your computer then go back to a different site and download the software again. I have not experienced any similar problems with AVG but I have with a package that was far from free. This sort of thing happens and aside from making a fresh start there is little that can be done even by a professional…

      Good luck.

I have 3 different computers with this problem, one with Vista and 2 with XP. I have tried all the fixes, deleting the CTF files, uninstalling (completely) and reinstalling the latest version. The problem returns within a day or two, all the techies giving this advice (on loads of different sites) seem to be rehashing the same advice. Perhaps this is an effort by AVG to get users to switch to the paid version? Now I’m going to try another free anti virus software because this has been going on too long.

Soccer Dave, nice commercial! The question wasn’t which free program is best. It is a request for an answer to a specific question. If you don’t know, kindly let someone answer who does.

Navigate to c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\avg8\update\download and delete the ctf files. This worked for me.

deleted ctf files. all sorted. thanks

Yeah. worked for me too. Thanks soccer don.
Nice to have questions answered as you say.

Maybe soccer dave could find another venue to proselytise on though I don’t doubt that avast works too.

Forget AVG uninstall it and download Avira anti virus been using it for 3 years and it works great doesn’t slow my computer. I tried AVG and Avast but did some research and it showed that they don’t work as well as Avira so forget those. Its free for a year then you will need to update it but just uninstall it and download it again and it will work fine.
