AVG / Avast! / etc. help?

September 20th, 2008 · 5 Comments

As I said in a previous question, I need a good virus/trojan remover. Everyone keeps telling me AVG or Avast! and some others. I was thinking about going with AVG, since a lot of people seem to use it, but I still don’t know what version I’m supposed to download/purchase. I want one that will remove all types of viruses, trojans, etc, not just one or some. Also something that will protect me in the future. Link me to what I’m supposed to get, please?!

I prefer Avast over AVG only because it’s a little lighter on used resources and it’s a bit faster than AVG. For free products, both do excellent job. As with most products, it will come down to personal preference.

You can find Avast and other recommended free programs here:

I don’t like AVG. My machine had about 4 viruses, and AVG didn’t pick it up, and Avast did. Avast also doesn’t use up as much resources at startup. So booting your computer is a little faster. (Well, for me anyways)

I recommend Avast for Free. You need to register it though, but it’s still free :)

Hey I don’t know your previous question but okay from your this question I think you need help with antivirus. See I have used used all of them ( yes nearly all ) and I will tell you why one is better not the other.

      1. Avast is ridiculous, it will say everything is virus. Yes it thinks each .exe file as virus even though it is a program installed in our PC and also the uninstall.exe file of anything, it will pop up time to time saying you have virus when you have nothing. But yeah it’s scanning speed is a bit good.
      2. AVG - same as avast , though it will not say program files and uninstall files as virus , but if you have a keygen or patch or crack it will block them saying it is trojan downloader. You have to adjust it’s setting to make it undo this thing and yeah scanning speed is ok. BUT it will not monitor any changes in registry, that means any spyware can enter in your PC ANYTIME.
IT IS GOOD as it is free small and simple.
      3. Avira - so-so . BUT SAME PROBLEM moniters changes in registry but at a very low level and yeah its GUI is very bad. scanning speed is ok.
      4. Norton ( or symantec whatever ) - bad in the sense that it takes ages to scan PC, and uses a lot of disk space, no look at registry , also some time hangs the system.
      5. Nod 32 - good enough but too simple . it provides a function that weather it should detect PUPs or not. Not good in catching latest virus mainly spywares.
      6. McAfee - ALL IN ONE PROTECTION. ITS BEST FEATURE IS THAT IT NOT ONLY HAVE ACTIVE SHIELD RUNNING ALL THE TIME ( don’t worry it is there every antivirus program but not the next feature that I am going to tell ) IT MONITERS EACH AND EVERY CHANGE OF YOUR PC. but scan speed is just about okay BUT another best feature is virus catching it will find all unsafe things in your PC ( but one bad feature is that it may restrict internet traffic )
      7. Quickheal - NEVER BUY IT NEVER USE IT , because if you have any very important file , and it thinks that to be trojan or virus it at spot delete it not giving even a promt , and more worse you will not be able to restore it like we can do from other antivirus.
      8. Kaspersky - so so . finds virus at good level . scanning speed much better than compared to others . BUT to much restrictions in network traffic. You need to customize it ( a tough job ) to make it work your way.
      9. Spybot - Searches and Destroys - not actually antivirus but rather a anti spyware BUT THE BEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN . finds each and every change in system monitors each and everything. THOUGH BEING antispyware finds all trojans and virues . scanning speed SUPERB.

I HAVE USED MORE BUT THOSE ARE NOT WORTH TELLING.
SO YOU CAN SEE YOURSELF WHICH IS BETTER.

I will say that AVG, SPYBOT , KASPERSKY , McAfee ( total version not only virus plus )

NOTE . THESE things are based on latest versions I don’t know how any of them worked earlier.

I have to agree with mohit… although I’m not thrilled with macafee… based on experience it did not do a good job with resources and with detection on something that avg picked up at a first install (lacking some updates)…

karspersky is the best rated from what I’ve known.. look around you may be able to get a version you can still and hack so won’t have to pay for it.. but if you need a right-now solution you can’t go wrong with avast or avg.. I used avg… no problems what so ever… even with cracks or hack files… (I download stuff and scan it with avg and have had no complaints to report). I rather avg 7.5 than 8.0 version… 8.0 and spyboot search and destroy seem to have an issue with the the immunization done by spyboot search a destroy which is not an issue with avg 7.5…

my spyware programs I used with customers’ computers are the following
      a-square
      spybot search and destroy
      adware
depending on how much memory you got you may want to run one at the time.
