AVG Free Anti-Virus Software and internet pages timing out?

My laptop’s a little over two years old and until recently I’ve always used McAfee for my anti-virus software. I can no longer afford to renew it, so about two months ago I downloaded the AVG free version. Since then, I’ve had problems with internet pages constantly timing out, and it’s making me out of my mind. All of the computer nerds I know swear that AVG is the best, but it’s making me crazy.

Is this normal and what can I do to keep from going insane?
