Uninstall your currrent AVG from the Control Panel…Add/remove programs (XP) or Program Settings (VISTA)
Restart your pc
Download AVG 8.0 from their site and reinstall AVG.
Fully scan your pc
AVG stopped support of 7.5 in May but updates have still worked for a while.
I also suggest Spybot S&D and CCLEANER. Both FREE and linked on my profile page.

Mostly a firewall is preventing internet access of update process .

Re: 7.5 vs 8.0….I have 8.0 and have been getting the same CTF message for 2 days. I also disabled the firewall from Norton, even though it has worked fine for the last 3 years. The message just popped up after starting up one morn after shutting down the night before. No new programs or changes made to system.
I think there is another answer out there, I have not found it yet.

Oh, and no, Windows firewall is not enabled. However, I do seem to remember a notice that Windows update was being installed while I worked the day before this started. Makes me think that MS caused the problem and either they or AVG will take care of it. I am waiting a few days prior to worrying about it. I still have Norton running until then, and as I said, they have both been “playing nicely” together for the last 2 or 3 years without problems.

6 Jon // Aug 31, 2008
Same with me…updated to windows service pack 3 and now i get the same error message.

Exact same issue for me. I haven’t tried a re-install of AVG yet, hoping there will be a patch\fix instead.

same problem here. no updates. no changes.
9 Big Daddy // Sep 1, 2008
Hmm, I see this is a new problem. Started for me too out of the blue yesterday. I strongly suspect an error in the AVG automatic update that was likely last installed and am hoping a fix will take place on AVG’s end very soon. I didn’t do anything with Windows at all recently, so I don’t think that’s it. I’ll give’em about 24 hours to resolve it, then try an uninstall/reinstall, but I hate flying without a net.

AVG website must be having problems. The program can’t check for updates because it can’t download the updatelist (update control CTF file).

Do a manual download of the smaller 2 files then a manual update via the Tools menu - fixed

Exact same thing here it def has something to do with the windows update my other comp witch has no internet connect had it working fine i pluged in the internet and as soon as the windows update thing came up ….invaild ctf file hope there will be a fix soon
13 Bob D // Sep 2, 2008
Tony was right. Just download the updates from the AVG site to a folder where you can find them and open the AVG interface and press Tools and Update from directory then point to the correct folder and AVG will do the rest.
Thanks Tony, I forgot I had to do that before.

I found the following on another forum. Worked for me.
You need to delete the CTF temp files in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Avg8\update\download…. Dont delete all the .bin files in there unless you want to re-run all updates since your original installation. Only delete the avginfo files that end with .ctf….

manual download worked like a treat!! Brilliant
FYI
I took my system restore back to Monday and still it would not work through the auto download.
16 Darrell // Sep 4, 2008
Thanks Kevin, Deleting the *.ctf files worked, and now the auto web updates are working well.
17 Karen // Sep 5, 2008

Kevin wrote exactly the folder where these files are located, so what are you asking for ?
