The techies at the local computer repair shop recommend Avast! Anti-Virus, the freeware version, and I use it myself. Daily definition updates, auto- and manual-scan at several levels. Seems good to me. Just set it for high security after installing it.

If you go by detection rates, then Avira is your pick. It beats out Kaspersky in tests at the big testing labs. But Kaspersky has very good protection, and I would not say Avira is better. If you want a internet security suite, Kaspersky firewall is very strong. The Kaspersky Internet Suite, also has some other very nice features. Both of those picks have free trials, try both and decide which one works best for you. I like Kaspersky over Avira. For two reasons, Avira interface is not to my liking. The other reason is the false positives. I hated when Avira said something was a trojan and after spending a lot of time checking it out, finding that Avira was wrong.
