wep 64 works, but everyone knows thats easily crackable.
when i try to connect it says my card does not support wpa, but it is a wireless G card and i know it supports it.
so, i have enabled MAC address filtering and 64 bit WEP.
will this be enough to protect myself and the hardwired computer as long as i leave the wireless desktop always on?
so that the MAC address cannot be cloned?
any tips for getting wpa to work on this wireless G desktop card with xp SP2?
please help!

it'll stop the casual drive by leacher… but they can all be cracked by someone bored enough.
The mac address is easier to clone when the wireless machine is on because someone sniffing for packets coming from your network can see the mac they are comming from. If the other computer is off then only a brute force method will work and not quick or well with any encryption on.
Theres 2 kinds of people who will want to get into your network. Those who just want to casually use your internet, and those who want into YOUR network. Any security generally stops the first kind, no amount of security will stop the second kind, but if you have a good firewall on all you pcs and antivirus, then at least all theyll be able to do is surf the net.
And for your last question, i have always had terrible luck with belkin. I recommend netgear all the way around, and i have friends who have decent luck with linksys.
