I got a brand new netbook about a month ago and it came with McAfee installed as a trial. When that runs out I can download a free anti-virus from comcast…which i believe either McAfee or Norton.
What else do I need to keep my pc safe?
Anti-spyware,malware and adware software? More firewall protection?

I recommend you also get these free programs:
- Spybot Search & Destroy
- Windows Defender
Both of these scan for and kill adware, spyware, and malware.
But note that the free software you get from Comcast may be a full security suite that includes the above features in addition to anti-virus.

Try Avira AntiVir, it has the most powerful antivirus engine today, but does not have anti-spyware if you get it for free, you can buy it's Premium security and use Comodo Firewall. avast! and AVG works fine with Comodo too, but I prefer you to buy Avira Premium and use the free Comodo Firewall.
For more security, try SpywareBlaster and Secunia PSI, they can patch and restrict some malicious programs heading to your computer.
Also, do not use IE, it is vulnerable to more threats than other Internet browsers such as Firefox and Opera.
Keep updated with Windows Updates Security Updates and you should be fine =D

When you are clever, you are going to uninstall the McAfee trial. First of all it is a trial and secondly McAfee is not very good.
The best of course is to spend a little money to protect your new computer the best possible way and get a good internet security program.

Bitdefender Total Security
ESET Smart Security
When however you want to protect your computer free, you should do it with a combination of some anti virus and anti spyware programs.
