I’m doing a reinstall of windows. I will be running XP media edition sp3. I want to know what combination will be best to protect against all possible threats. I’m looking for tried tested and true combos based around McAfee av, network magic and windows defender. (Please no speculation or blind fanboy loyalties. Open minded/informed fanboy loyalties are okay
What I will be running…
- XP Media Center Edition SP3
- McAfee AV
- Network Magic - 2 computers networked, one is wireless running vista
- Windows Defender
What I am thinking of running with it..
- Threat Fire (ran well alongside McAfee for months)
- SUPERAntispywareRemover
- Malware Bytes
Should this be okay, non-conflicting?
Any better combos?
Any more anti threat software I should consider?
Any other thoughts/ideas?
P.S. System resources are not a concern, I’ve got decent hardware.
Thanks for your advice and time!

I’ve been using McAfee AV or AVG Free, Windows Defender, ZoneAlarm Free, Spybot all together for a long time and have never had an issue.

It’s not a good idea to put multiple "anti-virus" software since that tends to slow down a computers by quite a lot and also it usually gives a computer errors. Bye.

I’m not familiar with Threat Fire, but like your other choices. I might use Spybot Search & Destroy instead of Super anti spyware remover, though. As long as you remember to turn the annoying tea timer off, I prefer its protection.

GET NONE OF THOSE. I highly recommend Weboot AntiVirus with AntiSpyware, as it combines all those things, for one low price.

I’ve used both Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware Full Version and SUPERAntiSpyware Professional Edition. Just the free version of Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware is great, removed a virus that Norton’s did not detect, Webroot Spy Sweeper and Spy-Bot Search and Destroy detected the virus but could not remove it. Thus the reason for upgrading to the Full Version. As far as SUPERAntiSpyware Professional Edition, it slowed my PC down.
So from experience, I would strongly recommend Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware over Spy-Bot Search and Destroy and SUPERAntiSpyware.
My current combination for the past 6 mos.: ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4, Outpost Firewall Pro (firewall + antispyware), and Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware Full Version. Never had any problems with this combo… actually never found any malicious files with Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware Full Version after using ESET + Outpost.

Well ive seen your combo…i think its too much in thir to kill a Pc. I have been using Eset Smart Security since ever with Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware. Ive faced no problems at all and i am a happy user.
Eset provides: Antivirus+Intrenet security+Firewall (Also their Rescue Disc)
Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware: Provides a good and deep scan, its perfect and I use it once a while.
Recently ive also added “Microsoft Security Essentials” to the list of Security programs i use, its been helpful (almost going remove Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware)
Tip: Use SANDBOX (Sandboxie) for extra protection from viruses, buggy apps, .exe’s (other files from the internet which may harm computers really bad).
