I have Vista preinstalled with my new Dell PC. I have an index score of 3.1. However, performance in advanced 3-D games are not so decent. (Most likely because of the high demands of Vista). Thus, I wish to install XP and have a dual boot. I have a separate partition and I have booted from the XP CD-ROM. However, when the installer loads setup files and tries to start up windows to begin install, an error message appears saying something like "Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your system…" This occurred more than once, preventing me to install Windows XP. Does anyone know what might be causing this problem and how to solve it?

It is relatively easy because of Vista's built-in disk management; however, the instruction guide assums that XP will be installed properly if I follow the instructions, whick in my case, not true.

XP has to be installed first you need to wipe your HDD clean. delete all partitions and re partition it and try again. always have to install the older windows first

XP should be installed first in a dual boot. Also XP usually has errors with the AHCI BIOS that Vista runs with. When installing XP it's best to change the BIOS back to ATA, but doing that may kill your vista installation.
Depending on the system you may also need the storage driver, should be on Dells website unter storage drivers, look for hte Intel matrix storage manager, especially if your not using the disk Dell sends to install with (it has the driver slipstreamed on it).
If you had the BSOD stop code that would be helpful also.
