Windows on my old PC has gotten extremely sluggish, no longer recognizes the internal DVD-ROM, and somehow recognizes a phantom floppy disk drive that simply isn’t installed anywhere on the tower. Since Windows stopped recognizing the internal DVD drive, I’m wondering if it’s still possible to reformat using an added external DVD drive, to get Windows to set up correctly, wipe the hard drive, and start fresh with Windows correctly recognizing the internal DVD (and that there isn’t a floppy drive at all)?

yes, you can reformat your windows xp using external drive, just plug the drive and set first booting priority to that drive under BIOS. just boot with a bootable disk as you do….

go into bios and tell your comp to boot to cd-rom first then use the windows instillation to delete the partiton and then make new partition and then format the drive. and place fresh copy onto windows.
