Can my employer ready my personal email from my secured Mac server that requires a password? ?

August 21st, 2008 · 1 Comment

I am very suspicious about this.

I have internet access at my office which is a huge nationwide corporation. I know they have access to my email at work.. thier email.. my business email that is. I only use that account for business related things of course. I am the recepient often of jokes that are forwarded from co workers ect.

However, on breaks ( my own personal breaks ) I can and do check my own personal email that is “secured”encryped and so on.. it requires a password that I DO not store on my computer.

I was approached yesterday with something personal from my boss. It was not a huge deal, but none the less it made me think omg.. are they reading my personal emails? it appears as though they may have.. like I said it’s not a big deal but wow.

Typically employers reserve the right to inspect any and all traffic or data on their networks in the name of security and proper use of their resources. If it really was information they could only have found out via your email, yes it is possible your mail is being read. Perhaps it isn’t really encrypted, or you have a keylogger installed or something.

I don’t like to think of such things, but if it is in your employers policies to do so not much you can do about it.
