Can nod32 smart security scan exe files before you install them?

I scanned a exe. file(zipped) and nod said it was clean but once I opened it it had a trojan inside,it got quarentined and all but i wish the scan detected it in the beginning.I right clicked the exe file and selected scan with eset was this the proper way to scan a file??
