October 13th, 2008 · 6 Comments

Hi
SO I want to know what I can do so that my computer will go alot faster because at the moment if I click on something it can take up to 3 minutes to open. Even the internets going slow for some reason and its supposed to be a really fast connection we were told its the fastest broadband package (well actually I suppose its the browser page because thats what takes forever to come up on the screen but once its up the stuff on that page loads really quick so i suppose its not the actual internet thats goin slow) but the computer keeps screwing up and it is soo hard to do anything cause everything is moving slow. I just want to know what I can do to make everything just work like when I click on something it will jsut open like normal computers. Its a windows XP and I do have virus protection if any of that helps.????
Please help I have a lot of work to do and at this rate itsa neva goin to be in on time.??
Thanx

you have to defrag, computers will get slower as you add new stuff, and its RAM can start to fill up, defrag moves the stuff in RAM so you have bigger spots. go to All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter

Make sure your computer is free of virus, trojan, spyware and adware.
Uninstall software applications that you no longer use.
Use a utility like CCleaner to do some cleaning up.
Flush your browser’s cache, cookies and temporary files.
      Defrag your harddisk.

Could be any number of things. How fast is your processor? How much RAM do you have? How often do you shut it down or reboot? How full is your hard drive? If you have a sufficient amount of hardware resources, Perhaps you should backup your files and do a fresh install of XP.
      Hope this helps.

To speed up your computer, here are the tips I use to speed up my Windows XP computer:

      1. Disk Cleanup:

Disk Cleanup remove temp files, temporary Internet files, recycle bin files, etc. To get to Disk Cleanup, go to Start, Programs, Accessories,
System Tools, and click Disk Cleanup.

Disk Cleanup doesn't remove everything. Here's a freebie alternative I
use which remove junk files, cookies, dead registry files, etc It's called
CCleaner. Go to http://www.ccleaner.com to download and install
CCleaner. There should be instructions in the program on how to use CCleaner.

      2. Disk Defragmenter:

When you remove, add, or delete files, they will become fragmented. Fragmented mean files that are stored in contiguous locations on the hard drive. The files are spread across the hard drive which mean the
hard drive's head will have problems reading and finding the file since it has to go all over the hard drive to locate and find different files to bring them together. This will slow down your computer's performance. Disk Defragmenter put all fragmented files together on the hard drive so the hard drive's head can find the files faster and, thus, this speeds up PC
performance. To get to Disk Defragmenter, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and click Disk Defragmenter. Click Analyze first. If Analyze says you don't need to defrag this volume, still click Defragment. If Analyze says you need to defrag this volume, click Defragment. Make sure all programs are closed. After you are done defragging, click Close Report, and click the red X at the top. Go
      back to using your computer.

      3. Spyware and viruses:

Spyware and viruses can really slow down your computer. Spyware is software designed to spy on every keystroke you make. Adaware is software designed in freeware software that throw pop up ads on your screen. Malware is malicious software that's decided to mess up files
on your computer. Viruses are software that copy itself and infect the PC without the person's knowledge. Trojans are software that designed to help but does exploit a person's computer instead. Worms will repliciate itself on a person's computer or through the network. To get rid of viruses, trojans, worms, etc., do a full scan of your hard drive with your anti virus software. To get rid of adware, spyware, malware, etc. try http://www.download.com/3001-8022_4-10861988.html?spi=5170a214430a7bbd570ed459084d3f9e to download Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6. Use Adaware SE 2008 from http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2008/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad= aware&subj=dl&tag=top5&cdlPid=10844457 for junk that Spybot misses. After Spybot and Adaware are download and install on your machine, then scan your hard drive for any nasties. Remove all adware, spyware, and malware threats that's found. Keep using your
anti virus, spyware, and adware software to remove all threats until it's
      gone.

      4. Run Error Checking to make sure there are no bad sectors and system file erorrs on your hard drive. To go to Error Checking, double
click on your "My Computer" icon, right click on your hard drive which
is usually C:, click Properties, click Tools tab, click "Check Now…",
make sure both options ("Automatically fix system file errors" and
"Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors") are checked, click Start, then reboot your computer. This will take a while. If there's too many bad sectors on your hard drive, it's time to replace your hard drive.

      5. Lack of physical RAM:

If you lack physical RAM in your computer, your PC won't allow you to open two or more applications. This will cause your computer to run slow or freezes up. If you got 256MB or less, for example, try upgrading to 1GB if your motherboard do support 1GB.

      6. MSConfig:

Go to Start, Run, type in msconfig, click Enter. Go to Startup tab. Uncheck programs you don't want starting up. Leave your anti virus application checked and alone. Then click Apply Changes, Exit, and Reboot Now to reboot your machine.

      7. Slow Internet:

If your Internet is slow, it's your registry that needs to be tweaked
for broadband service. The registry is a Windows database of hardware, software, user configurations, computer name, workgroup name, etc. To tweak your registry for broadband, download TCP Optimizer to your desktop from http://www.speedguide.net/files/TCPOptimizer.exe. After you are done downloading and installing TCP Optimizer to your desktop, set the Connection Slider to the download speed you are paying for in kbps, for example, 3000 Kbps, 6000 Kbps, 10000 Kbps, 5000 Kbps, etc. If you don't know what your download speed is, check your ISP's website or call them up and ask. Click Apply Changes, make sure "back up files" are checked, click Yes to reboot your machine. See if your webpages are loading a little better and faster. Leave well alone. If it's still slow, call your ISP and ask them to help you since it could be on their end, traffic, or the site itself is overloaded. That's what their tech support is there for.
