I've had Kaspersky Internet Security for the past year and it's about to expire. Can't afford to renew. Should I try to uninstall it via Kaspersky's Uninstall feature or will I get BSODs once I put new security in place?
Would I be better off doing a clean install of the operating system, then putting new security program in place?
Any recommendations for FREE (not trial) security suites or apps?
Thanks!

just uninstall the kaspersky
then i suggest you
Try Avast you can not get a better anti virus system for free.
it has many features you will have to pay for in other systems.
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
don't forget to register or you will only get a 60 day trial
for a fire wall try this one also free and it has no conflicts with avast.

Well, you can easily uninstall it, no BSOD would happen.
You should check out the pirate bay for Panda Internet Suite 2009.
If you want to be ethical, try AVG's free edition, it's really good.
No need to reformat, even though reformatting once in a while is a good thing to do.

Have you tried searching Ebay for your Kaspersky subscription? It is much cheaper than purchasing it from their website, just make sure you get someone with a solid rating. As for uninstalling Kaspersky its pretty simple. Here is the what Kaspersky themselves says http://support.kaspersky.com/kis2009/install?qid=208279744 As for free anti-virus's the main players are Avast!, AVG, and Antivir. All will suffice for everyday needs although I prefer Avast! Other security apps I prefer are Comodo for a firewall and CCleaner for keeping my computer clean. Enjoy.
