I think it was the Shockwave Player update I downloaded and had an option for Norton PC Checkup, I did the checkup thing and used it’s uninstaller which worked, But every time I restart my computer it opens and downloads again. I have used the built in uninstaller and windows remove programs. Do I have to find the directory on my hard drive to delete it? Anyway Norton Anti-virus is acting like an annoying virus itself!

Try removing C:\WINDOWS\system32\Adobe\Shockwave 11\symcheckupstub.exe
3 Pete // Oct 1, 2008
I had the same problem - couldn’t get rid of PC Checkup because it reinstalled every time I rebooted.
I deleted the file mentioned above - C:\WINDOWS\system32\Adobe\Shockwave 11\symcheckupstub.exe.
But now I get an error message during Windows start-up which says something like “Windows could not find C:\WINDOWS\system32\Adobe\Shockwave 11\symcheckupstub.exe”
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Shockwave (without PC Checkup this time!!!!) and still get the same error message on start-up.
Thanks in advance….

had the same problem, in the end had to go online with a norton support analyst as i didnt want any long term system problems.
In the end he told me to download Your Uninstall 2008 to forcibly remove the program, how annoying!
It works though and now i’m completely Norton free!

you have probably have a registry setting that refers to C:\WINDOWS\system32\Adobe\Shockwave 11\symcheckupstub.exe that needs to be deleted.

uninstall Norton PC checkup won’t work because it adds an entry to task scheduler to install itself at log on
delete the entry and Norton is gone.
7 George // Oct 7, 2008
six’s comments above worked for me!
Here’s a few added comments to make it easier for nubies.
Go to: Windows\task
Open the task folder. Click on the various tasks until you find one that lists Norton PC check up. In my case there were two entry’s as I had removed Norton PC checkup up earlier, then re booted to see it installed again.
Delete all folders that have Norton PC check up mentioned.
Then uninstall the program, and it will stay gone.
I can’t believe Norton put that program out there. It slows bootup down so much I couldn’t believe it! I would get the “welcome” screen, then the picture I have on my desktop. But that was it! Not even one icon or start bar showing. Equivalent to the “blue screen of death”! Then, after a LONG wait, my icons would appear.
As I was waiting, I observed that my DSL modem was downloading. I’m guessing that if my connection was not running when I booted up, I may have never seen my desktop load completely!
This comment directed to Pete:
“But now I get an error message during Windows start-up which says something like “Windows could not find C:\WINDOWS\system32\Adobe\Shockwave 11\symcheckupstub.exe””
That’s because the entry’s mentioned above are still in the “tasks” folder. Delete those entry’s and I’m guessing the error message will go away.

excuse me. but there’s nothing inside the folder “tasks”

Windows keeps trying to install this exe file.
How can I make it stop for good.
Thanks

Why not run the C:\WINDOWS\system32\Adobe\Shockwave 11\Unwise.exe then get Shockwave again avoiding Norton this time?

George’s thoughts did it for me!

for me, the best solution is
“Arch // Nov 3, 2008
Why not run the C:\WINDOWS\system32\Adobe\Shockwave 11\Unwise.exe then get Shockwave again avoiding Norton this time?”
i try this steps, and it work! thanks Arch..

I tried all the above mentioned…but still experience the same thing…However, instead of calling in the “symcheckupstub.exe” in the Regedit, i just called “C:/”
This is still annoying to me as each time I startup to Windows, the C drive window will pop up.
Deleting the registry did me no good, it keeps refreshing itself again and again…Tried several tools too like “jv16 PowerTools”, “Your Uninstaller 2008″…but still no solution.
Note: Neither reinstalling Shockwave 11 (Yea, the damn problem popped first from the update) also did not work for me nor System Restore. Only option left guys/gals?
-Damn most of Norton/Symantec products to heck!

To anyone who might be reading this and still face the problem of this thread, you could try this solution:
1. Uninstall Norton PC Check
2. Delete all files relating to this program (eg.symcheckupstub.exe in your C:\WINDOWS\system32\Adobe\Shockwave 11)
3. Go inside regedit and also manually clean the services/registries that are attached.
4. Still inside regedit, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Current Version -> RunOnce. Change the symPCCheckup Data to just “C:\”.
5. Reboot into Windows Safe Mode (Press F8 during boot time)
6. Get into the regedit and navigate to the same location in step 4.
7. Delete the symPCCheckup entry.
8. Reboot into Windows normally (automatic if you reboot your PC while in safe mode, else press F8 and start Windows normally)
9. There should now be no annoying popup window or alerts.
The only downside I still can’t figure is to remove the entry of symPCCheck in regedit. The data is still there, just that its not executed anymore. Anyway, I can live with it.
Cheers all!

Same problem here. But i found a way, which is more a shortcut.
1. Go to Windows security Alerts, click Windows Firewall, Exceptions, and unclick Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop, then click OK.
2. From the Control Panel, click remove/add programs, click Norton PC Checkup then uninstall.
3. Run MSCONFIG, choose services and uncheck all services linked with ADOBE and NORTON then click ok.
I’ve done this and for 2 days that PC Norton Checkup icon and folder stops appearing.

I had installed Adobe Shockwave but it gave me no option to choose Norton PC Checkup. Today When I booted up Norton came on and scanned my computer. I immediately searched and found this page. hawkeye //Nov 19, 2008 had the solution for me. Glad to have all you people out there that knows what they’re doing!

I had the same problem but found JaeWon’s (15 Nov) ethod worked well for me but instead of entering “C:/” as the symPCCheckup Data I made a “.bat” file (remember them?) as just an empty text file with a .bat extention in say the root folder, so that the symPCCheckup, which I can not remove from the run once folder, just runs the empty bat file and nothing else. The result is that instead of having a folder open unwanted on the desktop, a dos shell window flashes open then closes again almost unnoticed, which is good enough for me. Problem solved.

I had a similar problem. Security Scan came with Shockwave update, I guess I missed the box to un-check. I used add/remove and the program appeared to be gone. Every re-boot of the computer and it was back. Uninstalled again, and used autoruns. Found Norton in two spots. One was the scheduled task, the other in start-up as a downloader, allegedly one time. Deleted both and it appears to be gone for good.

Uninstall shockwave & PC Checkup from add/remove programs. Reinstall shockwave player and uncheck the option for PC Checkup. No fancy footwork needed.

JeaWon solution worked for me Also CCleaner had SymPCheckup listed in as a startup.
Thanks

We apologize for tge delay in getting this information to you, but are currently searching for people who may have had a problem uninstalling the Norton PC Checkup tool. There was an unforeseen glitch in the PC Checkup 1.0 tool, which has been fixed as of 11/17/08 and automatically replaced with PC Checkup 1.1. Any person who may have an old version of the PC Checkup tool on their system should receive an update automatically by launching the application. Then, upon closing it, it should uninstall. Again, our apologies for any inconvenience or frustration you may have experienced while dealing with this issue. Our goal is to help you maintain a healthy PC and avoid computer frustration and we appreciate you bringing this problem to our attention.

Dear Norton, 1st time disappointed by Norton, just yesterday updated Shockwave Player got very, very annoying Norton app. Followed George’s Oct 2008 suggestion and seems to have fixed the problem for me.
23 Ray // Feb 18, 2009
I’ve just been through what I hope is a successful removal using Bob’s suggestion.
But this is missing the point. One should have to “opt in”, not “opt out”. This Norton PC Checkup, as someone in a different forum said, passes the duck test. It looks like a virus, quacks like a virus (spurious “errors” like you haven’t made a purchase from Norton)…

This seems to be the same ol trick that the unscruptulous hackers use to make you buy their product. They infect and at the same time send an email to correct the problem. The way to get around this is from us who have ventured before you.NOTHING IS FREE!!!!!! Do not go to Norton.Com/FreeCheckup2. OK? Just install what you have purchased.
Good Luck!

you did not fix this issue, it still happens. Even your own removal tools will nor remove this. So on I go to trying a permanent solution, probably blocking all Symantec and Norton related websites in that solution. I know some of these will do for now. you Norton PC Checkup is as bad as SWP2009 and Antivirus 2009. just another hijacker in disguise.
28 ray // Aug 1, 2009
OK I have blocked the following web sites, maybe this will stop some of the PC Check-up. I don’t use Norton or Symantec products anyway since they are resource hogs.
