i am using a windows vista. i used vista os x as my theme, and I tried to uninstall it. these were the instructions http://patrickgs.deviantart.com/art/VistaOSX-09-Uninstall-100318778
then after changing authui.dll to authui.bak, i tried changing the others. the others wont change the extension name, i tried to change back authui.bak to authui.dll, but it wont. scared of something happening to my laptop, i shutted it down. it wont shut down, it was just showing a black background. i manualy offed it. as i open, when the screen were I was asked to click an account, it wont show any but a black screen. what should I do then? im scared of anything happening to my laptop.

heh u shouldn’t have been editing dll’s dude …. lol thas crazy… why would u do that? ur not even the administrator on Vista until u go into safe mode remove all admin accounts and set the password to the original admin account ,, i think there are more steps,,, any way,, u shouldn’t have been able to rename a *.dll in the first place,,, but u did,,, and it needs to be renamed in recovery console…. authui sounds like its doing some internal system authentication for User interfaces,,, u most likely edited something that allows ur background to be displayed,, ur work is in recovery console,,, =)

What did you end up doing? I did the EXACT same thing…I know, I feel really stupid right now. Is there anything you can do to undo this (System Restore apparently doesn’t work) ?

I made the same stupid mistake but I had multiboot(I had more than 1 account), so I was able to boot into the other account and not the account I screwed up! (YA!!!!!!!). You would have to reinstall windows in order for your programs to run again, if you don’t partition your windows when you install it you would still be able to access any of the programs you in your messed up account but all the settings, themes, ect will be gone
