Did someone actually tested Comodo vs Avast??? At the moment I have Comodo firewall and Avast installed and try to figure out if Comodo AV is at least as good as Avast, but everyone just speculate, I haven’t seen anyone to say I tried bothe of them on same machine… etc… Do I have to do everything by myself? :)

      hi!
      I suggest comodo antivirus.

You should uninstall Avast and install Comodo Internet Security (Both its Antivirus and Firewall). In my particular case, i used to install Avast antivirus (along with Zone Alarm Firewall) to all of my customer’s computer repair PC’s before I got to know Comodo Internet Security.
I am a professional computer tech and Avast has caused me numerous grief! First off, Avast is a GREAT antivurius >>> ONLY when it is working. The main problem with Avast is that you have to register it and get a PRODUCT KEY!! for its FREE VERSION?!?!? and they expect you do repeat this procedure once every year. I didn’t mind that small inconvenience, but at least Alwil software did not manage to get their licensing server and/or their software licensing part working properly. When I did my house calls, I physically went to each one of my customers, I repaired their compute, and at the end I installed Avast antivirus, run a full scan and then walk my customer in “registering” the software, which they got emailed the license key and they input it on the software and the software confirmed to them that the action was accepted. Well, these same customers then calls me like in 1 to 2 more weeks to tell me that their computers are slow, that they are getting pop ups, that they got the smit fraud/vundo, . When I went back to my customer’s house I discovered that Avast wasn’t even running any more, letting ANY application (whether good or badware) ??!! When I tried to manually execute Avast Antivirus to see what the hell happened, I got the dreadful message that said that Avast antivirus had expired and that I needed to register it for it to run (which I walked my customer to that process again), repaired my customer’s computer, run a full antivirus scan and every was great. I then, of course, had to give my customer a logical explanation as to why the AV failed to protect them abruptly failing to adhere to their own 1 year antivirus protection. Not knowing what was the exact failure for Avast to maintain its license key and adhere to its promised (uninterrupted) 1 year protection, I proceeded and told my custoner that there was a problem with the database of the programmer’s antivirus that most likely caused a reset or false invalidations rendering your software useless. All this without being able to charge my customer again due to my service warranty that I originally gave them. For the other customers I got the same results, but in a random basis, not in the exact 1 week after installation and registration. It was so random that in one case it lasted for a good 2 months before bailing out, then in another case 3 months, then 1.5 month, then 4 months, then 6 months, even 3 days in a rare occasion!!

And yes, I did make sure that the system time was OK, was set to the person’s correct GMT zone (Eastern Standard Time) in my and my customer’s case) and that the date was properly set — even in BIOS.

in about 60% of these customers that I had to go to their house in refference to Avast Antivirus having expired WAYYY before its 1 year expiration date they had REPEAT failures in the same randomness as explained above.

I lost my patience with Avast that I ditched it for AVG Antivirus before I was aware of the existence of COMODO,.

When I heard of COMODO.com I downloaded their software on one of my test PC’s I did an extensive analysis versus AVG and versus the dreaded Avast and found by my self that COMODO was able to pick up viruses and trojans that at the same date of the running the test Avast’s virus database did not recognize the virus. Overall, COMODO was able to pick up more viruses than AVAST and AVG rendering COMODO a better antivirus.

Now, I install COMODO Internet Security to all of my customer’s PC and when then tell me when will it expire, I now tell them that it never expires and that it always auto update.

For COMODO internet security, there is a feature that was giving my customer a hard time at first until I found a fix for preople that are very novices for computer. I told them to disable the Proactive Defense, but leave enabled the firewall. The reason is that the proactive defense was giving out way too many pop up for any action any application on the system took. So, when they wanted to install a new application, such as Quake 4 Arena multiplayer game, they will get dozens of DEFENSE alerts. If you are new to computers and dont have the necesary level of expertise to be able to disern what application is a legigimate application and what should be ‘blocked’, then just disabling the proactive defense, just that feature, is a good idea. Afterall, just with the firewall and the antivirus enabled should give you a good protection.

Now, I am investigating a new application called “Clean Slate” made by Fortress to top off the protection to my customers, but Clean Slate is not free and will require my customer to pay the small price if I decide later on that Clean Slate is a good program. Another one is Deep Freeze, but if you use Deep Freeze in conjunction with COMODO you have to create a “Thaw Space” and map the user profile there so they can be able to save their documents, music, pics, etc there without getting deleted. but neither ’system configuration preserver’ is free. Its just a suggestion that I have typed here for all to see and consider along with COMODO internet security.

Let’s assume the problem with avast is no more (license issue). Will you recommend it?

    • 10 Neo // Feb 28, 2009

well, i have been using Avast! Home since last 6+ years. I never had any issue at all. Was using with W2K and now with XP.
Excellent product. Just have to get new license key every year. That’s not a big deal.
      Thanks Avast!

check out the monthly updated results on http://virusinfo.info/index.php?page=testseng
these are based on a free scanning website call virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com
COMODO performs alright but I wouldn’t recomend it above avast! even though there are certain annoying limitations.
COMODO have done a great job oon their firewall though!

i prefer comodo as it can automatically find viruses and quarantine them. it also has a great firewall and with the right settings, can even auto update itself with no problems. al in all, i think comodo is the best!!

ok ok …comodo has a firewall. Does AVAST? I’ve been using avast for a while with the windows firewall but i don’t feel safe with that firewall. I used to have ZOneAlarm running with avast but had too many conflicts… I will try out comodo by itself to see if it g’s or not…

I’ve Been using Avast for several years now and really love it. I used AVG before I found Avast. AVG didn’t detect many boot viruses that Avast had no problem detecting or cleaning. Avast does have a Network Shield which is a lightweight Firewall as they call it. I have been a IT consultant for over 9 years now and in my opinion, as far as firewalls, a hardware firewall is the best way to go and is much less of a hassle. Get rid of the software firewalls and just get a cheap router that has at least NAT and SPI firewall protection.

I have Avast! and Comodo running right now, and don’t see any reason to have one or the other. I was using AVG and Comodo but AVG gave me a false positive on a game installer and wouldn’t let me ignore it (yes I am sure it wasn’t a virus.) Anyway I haven’t had any compatibility issues with either AVG + Comodo or Avast! + Comodo. Comodo has a nice firewall and the AV works well, but avast has features like real time P2P scanning as well as real time IM scanning, which to my knowledge Comodo lacks. Also with Avast! you can customize more of the specific options (as in independent settings for IM scanning, email scanning, P2P scanning, and all the various shields.) Using both Avast! and Comodo has worked well for me on both Vista 64 and 32.

I’m using Avast as anti virus, and comodo as my firewall. Don’t get me wrong comodo anti virus is great. But avast update is what makes it better. PC who doesn’t have a firewall like comodo is going to have a problem with avast. Some of the viruses in the net are able to stop avast from working. A good firewall like comodo should help you stop a virus in accessing your anti virus before it hits.

I had been using avast home av and comodo firewall since 2007 I remember the version 2 of the firewall is good with avast but the new version is better.

What is more important is that you know that there are virus there. If you have this softwares even just one of them, you will do just fine. Unless you click on the virus it self and let comodo be infected or avast. Don’t choice allow to much.. research first :)

Avast is a little slow and clumsy in my experience, though it seems to have an okay detection rate. However I ditched it in favour or Avir Antivirus Free, which has, from my experience a better detection rate. As for Comodo, yes, it rocks. It picks up things AVG, Avir haven’t, and I run all on my PC, along with Zone alarm. However, right now I don’t think AVG is worth having, though it does seem to do very well with detecting minor spyware.

I feel a hardware router with NAT & SPI is the most secure way to go. However I also use a software firewall:
Bitdefender Total Security on my work PC’s
      Comodo Firewall and Avir
I also keep Avast portable, to use during monthly audits.

Keeping Windows secure with their Baseline Security Advisor, and even running their new
      Security Essentials, weekly.

One other thing. These days, it’s hard to get an ISP that isn’t giving you a Static IP. I pay extra to have my IP Addy rotated, every 7 2 hours (3 days) which helps keep those who would be trying to penetrate weaknesses out!

Also. I recommend running Client-Server setup, instead of Peer 2 Peer for those running more then 2 computers in a household or SOHO.

I use a Linux server with Slackware 12 for File-Serving since there isn’t any fee, like their is for
Windows, per Connected PC. It also works with my Hackentosh Dell Mini 9, crossing over with Windows Vista Ultimate x64 and Windows 7 Ultimate (Retail) upgrade
(I pre-ordered 5 per address I have), so I’ll be able to deploy it across my entire WAN when I get to them all. I’m staying in Cali while it’s warm here & cold in the east..lol
