OK, I've researched answers for questions on slow computers.
I'm not a gamer
I only have emails
I only look at news and follow paths to research new items
I have photos stored and on a web page
My DH wants to throw this computer out the window for he wants it not to freeze when he is looking at his emails and downloading videos from friends. And not many of those.
We purchased a newer computer to improve this problem.
AMD Athlon X2 64
Yes, we have DSL and I've recently purchased the regcure program. I have AVG 8.0 (paid version) I do delete the history, temp files on a regular basis.
I don't think I have a lot on the computer that should create these problems. I'm considering using fixfire or opera maybe.
Would this help? I'm afraid I'll screw it up big time.

have you considered defragmenting your computer? i use firefox dont usually have problems, i do have vista, doesnt sound like you have a lot like you said, try defrag, and then try a disk clean up as well if you need advice on how to do that go to start up, all programs, access, system tools, then disk clean up, try those two problems hope it works
also try checking your computer for errors, right click on your c drive then choose properties, then choose tools, then choose error checking

You know there's about a million different things that can cause your computer to slow down, but I'll share a few things you may not have tried.
First, check with your DSL provider and find out what download speed you are paying for and is there anything faster available. I didn't realize that I was on the 1.5GB program, but for $5 more per month, I could increase that to 3gb and for $10 more to 6gb. Also make sure the DSL modem you have is capable of the higher speeds, most are.
Second, I'm sure you know about disc defrag and have tried that. Before you run it, try to disable system restore on that hard drive. I don't know how Vista works, but it can be done on XP. After defrag, reboot and don't forget to enable system restore! I've used Norton's version of defrag as well as what comes with XP, both do the same thing, but Windows defrag is faster.
Third, also done before defrag. If you have a lot of pictures and you look at them in Windows Explorer as thumbnails, XP creates a file named thumbs.db in every folder. It is a system file and may be hidden, so set explorer to show hidden files. Use search to find *.db files then delete them, empty recycle bin and run defrag. The thumb.db files are always the most fragmented files on your hard drive and they can get very large.
Best of luck, contact me if you have questions, but I warn you that I know nothing about Vista.

There are so many applications and possibilities for optimizing Windows…
Adjust visual effects…
You can optimize performance by changing how menus and windows appear.
To do this… Right Click on Computer on Desktop > Choose Properties > Advance System Setting > Under… Performance… Choose… Setting > Choose… Adjust for Best Performance > Then… Apply > Then…Ok

Services are programs that run whenever you power on your PC. That means they are always loaded in memory, taking space and CPU time. Microsoft did their best and your PC runs services to print documents, to browse Internet, to run Windows Messenger or to allow remote connections to your PC.
But more likely than not, you just don’t need all of them! To really speed up your PC you need to disable many of the services.
Disable some services you don't need…
*** Do not use "msconfig" to disable services, type "services.msc" in the Run box instead! ***
The reason is because with msconfig and Hardware Profiles, you can disable services that may be vital to boot your system. With the management console (services.msc) you cannot. Also, msconfig, while unchecking the box, is disabling the service.
The "Disable All" button also scares me. It should not even be there as no reason exists to justify disabling "everything."
