I'm using a pretty cheap, wimpy laptop here (256 MB Ram) so I don't want unnecessary processes running if I can help it.
I've got Tea-Timer (Spybot's real-time scanner) always running, but I also have AVG (free edition) running a spyware scanner at all times along with the virus scanner. Do I need them both, because Tea-Timer is taking up a lot of memory. Or will AVG alone be enough?

No. use one of them. AVG which i prefer.
Use the TuneUp Utilities to tune up your computer, may be the startup and unnecessary programs running from the background.
