My parents won a bunch of money on the horse race last night. They are buying themselves a new computer and want to give me something in return for helping them so much. I once mentioned to them that my computer was starting to run slow because of the large files on them. So they want to get me a gift. Something to help my computer. What should I get to make the computer go faster?.. An external hardrive? or memory? what should I get.. I have a:
HP Pavilion desktop thingy.
uh.. Its wireless for the internet (if that matters)
uh.. running windows XP..
thats all I can think of..

It depends on what it is that is making your computer run slowly, but I would get a RAM (memory) upgrade because it would more likely speed up processes (an external hard drive may or may not).

The best thing for helping a computer run faster is memory. YOu can have the fastest Quad Core Intel/AMD without enough memory you are still running slow. I would go to http://www.crucial.com and let their little program scan your system and see what you have and what the max is you can upgrade too. You can purchase the memory there or anywhere. If you purchase it through crucial they will guarantee it to work with your system. Lets say information is cars on a free way and your memory are lanes they can use. Lets says 10000 cars are going down the freeway of 10000 lanes and all of a sudden the lanes merge into 256 lanes this will get very congested. and will take time to get all the cars through but if you had 2000 lanes ate the merge it will make the transition less congested. This is in reference to 256mb vs 2gb of memory. I would always go with the highest you can obtain in the system. Most systems wont see much improvement over 2-4gb unless you do a lot of video/music editing. Thanks

Ram is deff. what you need! Before doing this have you cleaned all the temp files, and ran the disk defragmenter??? If not doing so will make your computer run like new.. trust me! If you need any help shoot me an e mail!
