I got a bunch of Mcafee and Norton software for free after rebates when i bought my laptop. Would they work properly if i put softwares from both companies on my computer? If not, what bad things could happen, and which of the 2 would u recommend?

i personally have norton, but i've heard that mcafee is so much better. norton supposedly fills up your hard drive with a bunch of junk

norton (the orange 360) is a resource hog, will consume most of your time waiting for apps because norton has consumed most of your memory / cpu usage.
Mcafee in recent history has had 2 major exploits, both allowing remote access/control of an infected/targeted machine. (fool me once shame on you, fool me twice…)
perhaps consider some free alternatives.
avast (http://www.avast.com )
super antispyware (http://www.superantispyware.com )
advanced windows care (http://www.iobit.com )
all afore mentioned applications are freeware.

Both equally suck. Both will work decent, but neither provide great protection. I use trend-micro pro and it's not the best protection ever. Never run both at the same time, the firewalls and everything else will counter each other and cause conflict and it will make your computer run SLLLOWWWW. Honestly, I would suggest buying the pro version of avast! You will be amazed the things the avast! can find and the big company virus protection can't.
