A while back ago I had that same problem with my laptop and it was running very slow and what i had to do was wipe the computer hard drive clean and start over again. Most likely your computer is infected with a viruses and worms.

In my experience with Xp's I'd say it's probably a spyware/virus problem.
What you should do, since you've already backed up all your important files, just run your System Restore, which will restore it to it's orginal, factory settings, which should solve your problem.
Your System Restore is a disk that came with your computer, just put it in and restart, the rest is pretty self exclamatory.

You have a low amount of RAM for this day and age. I recommend buying more RAM. Most RAM costs about $20-$30 and is easy to install. Go to http://crucial.com/ and then scan your system. This will find out what type of RAM you need and then you can buy it straight from that site.

this computer is great and all but i would highly recommend getting more ram. i think u have a virus on your computer. i had that same prob with my windows XP and i had to get a new computer because i had lost the restore cd and now my old computer is useless. i hope you can solve this prob and get your computer up again because HP's are very strong and will last u a very long time.
