I use a windows xp computer. At the bottom right hand corner keeps popping up a shield with an x in the shield saying i have a security alert. I click on the icon and iexplorer pops up with a website talking about antivirus 2009, saying i have 3000 virus even though i don't have any. How do i get rid of this problem. My dad is too cheap to buy a spyware scan, so how do i remove this spyware?

Sounds like your Infected bad! Follow my directions exactly:
1) First un-install your current Anti-virus Program now this may seem scary at first but it is vital.
2) Go to http://www.avast.com and download the home version
3) Update avast! and then run a boot time scan to detect any nasty that may have been hiding in memory.
===NOTE===
avast! I think is one of the best Anti-virus program there is. Other people may recommend AVG, but AVG has bad detection rates and a bad User Interface. If you have any question about Anti-virus programs or about anything feel free to e-mail me.
4) Go to http://www.ccleaner.com and download and run the tool
5) Next go to http://www.safer-networking.org and download Spy Bot Search and Destroy, update it and run a scan.
===NOTE===
There are other anti-spyware applications out there like Spy-ware Doctor and Windows Defender, But Spy-ware Doctor has had a seedy past and Windows Defender has bad detection rates.
6) Now this my seem like it gets a bit redundant but it is vital to make sure your computer is clean.
7)Next run an online scan by going to http://www.google.com and then type in ***Bitdefender Online Scan*** minus the stars of course.
9) Now if you followed my instruction you should have a 100% clean computer
Now I love getting e-mails so if you have a Question feel free to e-mail them to me! Sometimes it may be a day or 2 before I have time to answers them though.

I had the 2008 version of this.
In the end - i had to re install windows.
In addition to the mentioned products (which i am in agreement with) i would advice The Cleaner.
A free scanner, which also helps.
Also, i have WinPatrol running on the background, that catches any new programs wanting to run, etc.

That box IS the virus! ~smiling~
So while you may not have 3000… You definitely have a few!
Your best start is to read to this forum -

One important thing is the fact that you should completely update the Operating System and ALL of the patches. If your machine is patched for the vulnerability on the HD, then YOU cannot get infected. It is the more proactive approach (patching your machine, keeping your software updated, using the most current firmware and drivers). AV is ALWAYS reactive!
