My husband recently purchased a new graphics card (PNY - 8600 GT 512MB) and put it in our computer. When he turned the computer on, you could hear the modem turning on, but the monitor remained blank. The on button for the monitor was flashing. He tried taking out the graphics card and plugging everything in as it was, but the screen still remained black. He finally determined that we did not have enough power source (we had 300w, the new card requires 350w), however by the time he figured this out, the on button for the monitor was not even coming on anymore - and when he tried to just plug in the monitor to any outlet it would not come on. He went and bought a new 500w power source and installed that, but the screen is still blank? Does anyone know what could have happened, or how it can be fixed????? We are out almost $300 for the card and new power source and if there's something we can do to fixe the problem ourselves, that would be great. Thanks!!
I appreciate all the answers I've received! - Just some clarification. We have already tried putting everything back just as it was before putting in the graphics card and the monitor still won't come on. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the monitor prior to adding the graphics card (ie removing the graphics card and using the one that came with came with the computer). There was no single or dual power supply that came with the card. We are not able to access any menus because the screen is completely blank. We can't figure out why our monitor would just suddenly stop working - and it's very stressful because we use our computer ALOT!!
Also - the computer and monitor isn't that old - only about a year and a half.

A video card wouldn't fry a monitor normally unless you got struck by lightning or something. Are you able to get into the menu system on your monitor and make sure the correct input is selected? New monitors may have VGA, DVI or HDMI and most will auto select the active port but sometimes you may need to change this manually. Make sure your video card is also plugged in correctly, most nvidia boards will require the small flat power adaptor to be plugged in since the AGP ro PCIX bridge doesn't supply enough volts to power the card directly.

Well if your Motherboard has an onboard video card(the one thats already in your Motherboard) try that thing first… if the onboard video card works, then the new graphics card has a problem…. the GPU might have been broken will shipment…. if your monitor wont turns on even tho you plug your monitor into another outlet, then your monitor is broken….. Most video cards nids 350watt power supply and higher…. higher power supply would be better…… Hope this helps…..

try putting every thing back as it was orginaly (incuding origianal graphics card) from there you can install the drivers for the new card. the most likly problem is that the drives for the new card are install incorrectly hope this helps
