ok well currently im using the pay version of bitdefender and avg free. i would like to disable everything on avg except the scanner and stuff needed for that. the reason i'd like to do this is because their interfereing with each other and making my computer really slow and i like the avg scanner and how it is on a timmer (i have it scan everyday at 4pm so i dont forget(im usually on then)) so if someone could help me with this that'd be terrific. thanks.
windows vista home premium and my desktop is maxed out with RAM at 2gb and i have a pentium D 3.2ghz processor and i'm still slow on startup like one of you mentioned from the scanner and regular internet browsing i closed avg and it doesnt persist anymore. and my avg free version 8.0 i believe. can i disable startup scanner and just have the regular dailing scan activated? or is that bad to do? thanks for your help so far!
i found how to use bitdefenders automatic scanner so i will most likely just undownload avg.

if i were you i would'nt disable any of avg's features,i also have bitdefender running along side avg and i don't experience any problems with either,if you are going straight on the web within 30 mins of system start then it will run slow as the startup scanner is still running i leave mine about an hour from boot up as to give it time to do its primary scan first, also network traffic at that time is quite high anyway so anyones system will be slower

ahhhhh . . . What is your OS? Win XP or Vista?
What version of AVG Free are you using 7.0 or 8.0?
To be on the safe side: to disable active protection you have to disable AVG to load on boot. go to Start>Run>services.msc or Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools, choose Services.
When Services open browse for AVG services, named AVG_____, read the description, and look for "real time". Right click on it. Choose Properties, then under "Start-up type:" choose Disable.
Yeah, in contrast to gingerbollocks, running two antivirus in real-time would really mess things up and even Microsoft advises against this practice. In Microsoft’s Antivirus Defense in Depth whitepaper, http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/topics/serversecurity/avdind_0.mspx it cited four problems caused by interoperability issues of running antivirus applications from a number of different application vendors on the same machine, i.e., memory overhead, system crashes or stop errors, performance loss and loss of system access.
In layman’s terms, the whitepaper can be summarized as: most of these virus scanners are installed with default settings, which unfortunately includes that their respective active protection or real-time scanning is enabled after installation. Unless, of course, the user tweaks the configuration of these scanners to disable one active protection, there is no guarantee that a PC is running only one scanner actively, in real-time, but rather they run along side each other once the PC is ON.

As mentioned, having two active av's is redundant, choose one for active protection (i would say bitdefender) and use the other for on-demand scans. When your license for Bitdefender expires i suggest you ditch them both and use Antivir, has higher detection and lighter than those.
