Disk imaging (copying) software for backup of HD?

What’s the best hard disk imaging software—Norton Ghost, or a cheaper alternative? Are these programs even necessary to create a bootable backup of my hard drive to send to my external hard drive? I’m using Win XP, if that makes any difference. Thanks
