There is a lot of discussion on here about illegal immigrants. But I wonder what the record is on catching unauthorized employment for people on legal work visas i.e working for a different employer. Are these non-immigrants found out? If workers fill out a tax form when starting employment, such as a W-9, supplying a social security number, aren’t they tracked this way?

Yes. ICE and the Coast Guard (mainly for illegal aliens coming from Cuba) are part of Homeland Security.

The ICE, which is part of Homeland Security, go to factories where they know there are big numbers of illegal immigrants and arrest them if they do not provide with working papers. Then they start deportation procedures that take some time. When illegal immigrants are arrested for normal crimes, they are placed in deportation procedures as well.
When employers pay their contributions to the Social Security Administration and the social security number does not match the name and date of birth, they receive a letter informing them of this situation and the employee needs to contact the SSA within 30 days.
Generally what happens is that employers pay cash ( under the table) to their illegal employees in order to avoid immigration laws.
I think it is a big problem because there are more than 14 million illegal aliens in the USA and they can not deport them all because it would cause a financial catastrophe.
