Do I have a trojan?

June 29th, 2008 · 6 Comments

I just clicked on a link which appeared to be for a site selling music tickets. Immediately a box came up from my macafee saying it had just blocked a trojan (.nimp i think?) and a lot of other info. The box disappeared quickly so i didnt get to read it properly. Then the web page came up with multiple pictures of what was meant to look like a dead baby, I think. I closed the page, and the quicktime symbol showed as the page was closing.
I am now performing a virus scan but a quick google search for 'trojan' suggests that it is not a virus, but spyware? Is that the case?

I know nothing about this stuff, can anyone help reassure me that this was safely blocked because I have firewall and antivirus? Or can i now have a trojan that the antivirus wont pick up on?
All advice gratefully received.

If I were uncertain, I just run my anti-virus tool again,
AND also run Spy Bot or Ad-Aware.

      Delete anything found.

If you clicked a URL that contains .nimp, then you're all right. As obnoxious as that thing is, it does nothing more than casually hijack your browser to annoy you. Think of it as an extreme variation of rickrolling- annoying but ultimately harmless. I know this in part because I belong to a site from where it basically originated, and also in part because when I clicked on such a link in Linux I wasn't asked to save an executable. The Quicktime logo is because it also plays video as part of its lulzy presentation. I suppose your computer must lack the right plugin to play their video.

Here's the folks behind it. Be real careful with their site unless you want that to happen again:
      http://www.gnaa.us/
(warning: racially offensive and will hijack browser for your "amusement")

Ehh, your pretty protected. You could also download AVG or Norton, that should give you some extra protection.

      Dead baby pictures scaring me.

Well usually if your running a scan, it will read a trojan. So run another full system scan, and if a trojan comes up, just remove it.

No, if it blocked the trojan that means your computer is safe. If you didn't have MacAfee, you would have gotten the trojan. And trojans basically go and make backdoors on your computer to let viruses and other bad things onto your computer without you knowing it. MacAfee isn't really that good in blocking stuff. The best 3 antiviruses out there, as shown by research from Cnet are (in order)
      1.Nod32
      2.Kaspersky
      3.Bitdefender
Macafee ranks pretty low in the list, even worst than OneCare and Norton. You should get BitDefender Total Security 2008, since Kaspersky consumes too much processing power (unless you have a high end $5000 computer of course) and Nod32 is very advanced, for computer nerd like myself and such. BitDefender is easy to use, does anti-spyware too. If you need a license for it, (it is like $40), email me at shadowshifter911@hotmail.com
