The operating system on my computer is Windows XP Home Edition. Windows Service Pack 2 is installed on my computer. I read that this offers firewall and virus protection. Do I need other internet security installed on my computer or is Windows Service Pack 2 enough to keep my computer secure? I am only asking because I have had McAfee and I currently have Norton Internet Security 2008. Both programs slow down my computer when I am having updates installed or when I am performing virus scans. It also takes 10 minutes to start up my computer.

YES!! Your computer can never be too safe. I would recommend Ad-Aware 2008 just to be safe.

It's always smart to have a backup, whether or not you PC has the software for it already. So yeah, invest in Norton or McAfee. When they save you from an Identity Theft, or Offline Porn Popups (Yes, this happens), you'll thank yourself.

It depends on the person.
If you watch your browsing and files you download you don't need any protection really.
I'm not suggesting that you go without it but there are free online virus scanners and windows firewall is better than no firewall, just watch your internet browsing/downloading and you will be fine.

Service Pack 2 does not include virus protection only a basic firewall, so you need to download antivirus software to protect your computer a free antivirus like Avast will do a good job and will not slow down your PC.
Get Avast from:
