Yes, you need both of hem. Not only that, but also the following things. I am going to explain here what are the essential things you need for a secure computing and internet browsing.

For a TOTAL computer security, you will need the following four things.

      1. Antivirus
      2. Anti-Adware or Anti-Spyware
      3. Firewall
      4. Internet Traffic Monitor and related Security Suite

I have posted the top ten antiviruses, , anti spywares and firewalls along with their links.

According to my experience, I would rate the antivirus softwares as follows.

      1. Kaspersky http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Kaspersky-Internet-Security.shtml
      2. ESET Nod32 http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Security-Related/Eset-Smart-Security.shtml
      3. AVG Anti-Virus http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/AVG-Free-Edition.shtml
      4. F-Secure Anti-Virus http://www.f-secure.com/small_businesses/evaluations/
      5. Trend Micro http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Trend-Micro-AntiVirus.shtml
      6. McAfee VirusScan http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/McAfee-VirusScan.shtml
      7. Norton AntiVirus http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Norton-AntiVirus-Final.shtml
      8. Avast Antivirus http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Avast-Professional-Edition.shtml
      9. CA Antivirus http://shop.ca.com/virus/antivirus.aspx
      10.Panda Antivirus http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Panda-Antivirus-Titanium.shtml

If you want free, then I would recommend AVG or AVAST.
      Choose one among them yourself.

All of the spywares are good in their own ways.

As I know, the anti spywares are listed according to the detection rate and resources consumption as follows.

      1. Spy Sweeper http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Popup-Ad-Spyware-Blockers/Spy-Sweeper.shtml
      2. CounterSpy http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Popup-Ad-Spyware-Blockers/Counter-Spy.shtml
      3. Spyware Doctor http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Popup-Ad-Spyware-Blockers/Spyware-Doctor.shtml
      4. SUPER AntiSpyware Professional http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html
      5. ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware http://www.download.com/ZoneAlarm-Anti-spyware/3000-8022_4-10449915.html
      6. Ad-Aware Pro http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Popup-Ad-Spyware-Blockers/Ad-Aware-Plus.shtml
      7. CA Anti-Spyware http://softwarecouponcode.com/anti-spyware/save-20-on-ca-anti-spyware-2008.html?gclid=CPyE1c7ChZQCFRERQQoduymeVw

      10.Maxion Spy Killer http://www.maxionsoftware.com/spy-killer.html

Get one from the list right away.

To my information, the firewalls are listed according to their protection as follows.

      1. ZoneAlarm http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Firewall/ZoneAlarm-Free.shtml
      2. Outpost Firewall Pro http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Firewall/Outpost-Firewall-Pro.shtml
      3. COMODO Firewall http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Firewall/Comodo-Personal-Firewall.shtml

      5. Webroot Desktop Firewall http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Firewall/Webroot-Desktop-Firewall.shtml
      6. Injoy Firewall http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Firewall/InJoy-Firewall.shtml
      7. SurfSecret Firewall http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Firewall/SurfSecret-Personal-Firewall.shtml
      8. Armor2net Personal Firewall http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Firewall/Armor2net-Personal-Firewall.shtml
      9. BlackICE PC Protection http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Firewall/BlackICE-PC-Protection-cnw.shtml
      10.BullGuard http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Firewall/BullGuard.shtml

If you wanna follow what I do myself, get Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 (recently released) it has all the four security functions. Go and get it.
That will help you the best.

      Good Luck fren!!!

Avast has built in antispyware, your anti-spyware software only needs to be run once a week to check for anything avast might have missed.

Yes, install spyware terminator is the best

    • 5 Brian // Jan 29, 2009

Yes you need both. There is no antivirus program that catches everything. I use Bitdefender antivirus alng with Superantispyware and MalwareBytes. With these three you can get rid of just about anything. Also keep your firewall on and be careful.
