i got the CA anti-virus through CenturyTel, and the email to activate says to uninstall existing anti-virus or firewall software before installing the CA anti-virus, my question is this…Do i need to uninstall my Windows defender?
I'm not very computer savvy so i'm not even sure it IS anti-virus software, it came with the computer as far as i know, either that or my teenage daughter installed it shortly after we got the computer 2 years ago. thanks in advance:@)
Well nevermind the CA isn't compatible with windows vista anyway but thank you all for the advice:@) have a great day

Windows defender is more of an anti-spy software than an anti-virus and is part of Vista, you don't need to uninstall it. I have installed internet security suites and windows defender simply stops being used.

I don't think windows defender will cause any problems, it does nothing, so you can keep it.

No, you don't have to uninstall windows defender, it is not a antivirus software.

It is inbuilt as part of the Vista system and yes it is an antivirus. You do not have to uninstall this (although other antivirus software you would need to) As soon as you put your next antivirus in it will take over as the main antivirus in your security system. You will have no problems.

Windows defender just stops working if you install something else over it. I have Vista, and its still there, but it does nothing.

Hi,
I do not advise you to uninstall the windows defender at all, to be safe you can just disable it. The reason you being asked to do that is because of the firewall prevent programs to be installed on your PC.
Go control panel, open security center and you will see "Windows Firewall". What i would do is disable the Firewall and turn it on right after i finish intalling any proram i want. It is very important to enable your firewall back. If your anti-virus comes with it's own Firewall, then it's ok to leave the Windows firewall off.
As far as unistalling the Windows Defender, i find it strange that you're being asked that, just make sure the anti-virus you are getting is from a legitimate source. To be on the safe side i always go with big names like Mcafe. They will never ask you to unistall the Windows Deffender and there is no e-mails to follow-up on the installation.
Very strange e-mail you got.. watch.

You can leave Windows Defender alone because it's not an Anti-Virus program. If your having issues with it after you Install your Anti-Virus program then just disable it "do not try to uninstall it". You can turn off Windows Firewall but your CA Anti-Virus program may automatically do it for you.
