They cost anywhere from $29.95 to $49.95 or more. Some of them claim to have found 500 errors on my computer.(Did they really find this many?)
Is it worth the money, or are there free registry cleaners that will find and repair the same 500 errors?

They do help to speed up the pc. There are a number of free ones, and one I like is called "Advanced Windows Care Personal". It's available for download at the below link. Good luck.

Not really. These "500 errors" are probably things that are not very important at all. Clearing extraneous entries from the registry is not going to speed up your computer.
Run the same program on another PC i'd be willing to bet it find a similar amount of "problems"
Assuming a PC does have a lot of issues in the registry, (in very specific places) a cleaner might help out a bit but it's highly doubtful you're going to see a dramatic difference.
I would avoid all programs that promise to "speed up your pc"
Just not worth it.

When your pc is important to you and you do not mind spending a little money, you should consider the following program.
As far as I am concerned, it is the best program there is.
TunUp Utilities 2008. It has 19 different programs to clean your pc, clean your registry, optimize your pc. disk doctor, customize your pc, and many many more
You can download it as a trial and the trial gives you complete access to all programs. No limitations on any of them

If you had to buy these programs individually it would cost you hundreds of dollars.
I have been using for quite a while now, and absolutely no regrets spending that money
