AVG is not that good.BitDefender 2008 is an outstanding product with a user–friendly interface that will scan all existing files on your computer, all incoming and outgoing emails, IM transfers and all other network traffic.BitDefender is easy to use, simple to install, has a great feature set and at $24.95, it won’t break your bank account. Anyone who spends time on the Internet knows the importance of anti–virus software; BitDefender will keep your computer virus–free and running smoothly.

You will find that Avast or AVG are amongst the best Anti Virus and I am sorry to tell you but they are free. I prefer Avast home Edition. Goto to cnet.com and look at the reviews.

My next door neighbor is an IT professional who works for Dell in Nashville Tenn. He only has AVG7.0 and told me it was just fine. It is also what I have.

      AVG is crap. Pure crap.

Mostly n00bs, the naive, the computer illiterate, and kids use AVG Free. People of their ilk love AVG because they say it is easy to use and almost never bothers them with any pop-ups or warnings. Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!

AVG has historically had the lowest virus detection rate of all the popular free anti-virus programs.

There are much better free anti-virus alternatives such as Avria Anti-Vir:

      and Avast:

      Hello –

I use the free version and I like it very much! My guess is that the for pay version has a lot of cool bells and whistles that make it better.

      Best of luck,

      Bill

Though somewhat crude, Jibbarjabar above is correct.

AVG does not have full functionality in the free version (they *may* have at some point, but after version 7.5 - nope), does not detect root kits, and does not detect Trojans.

Personally, if the choice for a free antivirus program has to be made, I'd recommend Avast (http://www.avast.com/ ) - I have had to work with a lot of virus protection programs professionally over the years, and Avast matches the paid programs pretty well.

I've repeated my (mis)adventures with AVG several times on these boards - suffice it to say that when push comes to shove, it does *not* do its job.

Avast, which I've been using for several weeks now, has no issues.

If you're willing to pay, ignore both Avast and AVG, and get a decent program like Kaspersky.

I do not recommend Symantec/Norton, as it is a horrible resource hog, and McAfee has a tendency to disable all other security programs you may have installed - which is a BAD thing.

I like this FREE tool that does an EXCELLENT job.

      Avast free Home Edition
      Get it here:
      http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.ht…

And please do a "thorough" scan as soon as you get it downloaded. The user interface is simple. Click the left side, and in the top menu that comes up, select thorough scan.

When it finds a culprit it throws up an alarm, then you DELETE the culprit, (do not quaranteen).

Then allow it to run all of the time, and you will be completely protected. It will "automatically" update itself, also for free.
You only need to renew your registration once a year, also free.

Note: I KNOW of several people who have used AVG and Norton and have gotten a virus anyway.
Don't go with Zone Alarm as it is hoggy and conflicting.
I've tried them all, and have had wonderful results with DEPENDABLE AVAST for the last 5 years.
The corporation I work for uses the Pro version, and has never has an incident. Avast is your answer.
