My computer company wants me to buy either Norton or McAfee, but avast is already free. The representative told me to buy Norton because it has firewall, pop-up blockers, etc. and avast doesn't. Does avast! 4 (free home version) have firewall and all that security stuff? Please help, I'm new at this.

No, Avast does provide good protection against viruses and the various forms of spyware but it doesn't have a firewall. That's not a big deal because you can easily download an excellent free firewall, far better than either Norton or McAfee. The latest versions of IE and Firefox include pop-up blockers.
Add in SiteHound and SiteAdvisor, use Secunia PSI to keep all your software up to date and you'll be fairly safe.
