Yes, Avast should automatically do the updates as long as you are on the internet.

Yes it does.Right click on the little blue ball and then click program settings.Go to both the update categories and set them to what you want.

Open the program up and click on arrow at top left then click on settings then click on update (Basic), it should show you what your settings are and you can change them there.
