I recently started experiencing problems with running Symantec Antivirus cooperate edition on my laptop (I got a free license for it through my college) the program would not scan my computer and reinstalling it did not solve the problem. I uninstalled the program and installed AVG Free version 8.0. My question is does the free version of AVG offer sufficient protection for my laptop or should I upgrade to a paid subscription? Thanks

Sure does. So does avast! Home Edition and Avira AntiVir Personal Edition. I've used all three of them and they are very good and kept my computer virus free. Right now I'm using McAfee VirusScan since it's free to DoD and military personnel.

If AVG is used along side a decent 2 way firewall (inbound and outbound), the yes it will offer sufficient protection, I've never paid for anti virus software in my life and I don't get viruses (but then I don't use P2P like limewire).
Avast 4.8 is another good anti-virus.
If you upgrade all you get is anti-spam and free support. (thats why AVG is free because theres no official support but theres lots of unofficial support)

You don't need to pay but go to http://www.avast.com and get avast free anti-virus.It has a much higher and faster detection rate than AVG.Go to http://www.threatfire.com and get free threatfire to go along with it and you will have great protection. Both are on access, they are scanning all the time, and both update 2-4 times every day.
